  4. What Happens During a Child’s Dental Check Up?

Hi, Dr Tessa Pate here. I am an Oral Health Therapist at Plaza Dental in Mackay.

Last week I saw James and his mother Rebecca from North Mackay. James had just turned one and was in for his first dental check-up. The appointment went smoothly, James was happy and his mother was relieved that there were no problems. Naturally, at the start of James’ appointment, his mum was a little nervous about what was going to happen and asked me, “What is involved in a 1-year-old’s check-up?”.

Quite a few parents with young children are unsure of when to have their child’s first dental check-up and what it involves. So, I thought I would make this video to share with you what we do here at Plaza Dental.

Firstly, it is recommended by the Australian council of paediatric dentists and pediatricians that your child have their first dental check-up by the age of 1. If your child is approaching this age or older then it may be a good time to start thinking about bringing them in for a check-up.

The first dental check-up is more about getting to know you and familiarising your child to the dental environment. We try to make sure the child feels as comfortable and safe as possible. For this reason, it is important that parents do not make the dental visit something to worry about, so for those parents who suffer from their own dental anxieties be careful that this does not transmit to your child. In the first dental check-up we will have a look at your child’s teeth for early signs of decay, make sure the teeth are coming up where and when they should be, review the diet and brushing habits (ie. What to use and how to do it) and make sure the teeth are being kept clean. We will also talk about the parents about the dental treatment they have had. Studies have found that parents who have had a lot of dental work done often have children that will also have dental problems. We aim to recognise problems early, prevent problems down the track and help your child with a great start to life.

If you have a child who is nearly 12 months old or older and has not seen the dentist before then now is a good time to get them in for their first dental check up.
