3 Reasons Why Invisalign Is a Great Teeth Straightening Option for Teens

Looking for orthodontic options for your teenager? Let’s have a look at why Invisalign is great for teens!

Hi, Dr Ninad Bhatt here from Plaza Dental in Mackay. Yesterday I was with our patient Danny and his son Tim from Mount Pleasant. Tim just turned 13, and his parents are now exploring orthodontic options for him to help him with his teeth crowding. After evaluating Tim’s lifestyle and habits, we have decided that Invisalign is a great option for him.

Let me take you through what I went through with them.

Firstly, Invisalign provides an excellent way of straightening your teeth. There are many, many orthodontic procedures which will proceed just as effectively with Invisalign treatment as they would with conventional braces. In fact, with some orthodontic treatments, Invisalign will actually give you a faster result than conventional orthodontic treatment.

Many people and not just teenagers like the fact that the Invisalign aligners are clear, so from a conversational distance you can’t even tell that you’re having your teeth straightened. This reduces the self-conscious factor, especially among teenagers, which tends to increase the compliance of the patient, which improves the results that we get.

Another advantage of Invisalign treatment is that you can eat whatever foods you like during treatment. With conventional braces, many of the foods get stuck around the braces. It makes it hard to eat some foods because of the discomfort associated with that. In addition, it can make it harder to keep your teeth clean. There are no ridiculous restrictions with either eating foods or cleaning your teeth with Invisalign. This can make the procedure more comfortable for people, and improve the condition of the teeth afterwards so that you not only have straight teeth but also have healthy teeth.
Finally, for active teens who play a lot of sports, Invisalign can be a safer and more comfortable option compared to the metal wire with traditional braces.

However, because Invisalign utilises removable retainers, it does mean that compliance is crucial for your treatment success. So the commitment that the patients make is to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, every single day, all the way through treatment. So for that reason, Invisalign isn’t for every single patient.

So to sum up the advantages of Invisalign over conventional braces is that it’s invisible, so it reduces the self-conscious factor that a lot of teens would already be experiencing. It will move the teeth just as well or in some cases better than conventional braces. There are no food restrictions. Teeth are easier to clean. It can be safer when playing sports.

However, the one downside is that it does require a commitment from the patients.
